As you read this, I am jetting off for a couple of days in the Arizona sun and a full immersion in the Tucson gem show vibes.
There’s just something about the sunlight, dry warmth, and the hum of so many crystals together in one place . . . I can already feel the energy as I type.
It has been 11 years since I last shopped the Tucson Gem Show, but the magic still lives in my heart. Goodness, I’ve missed this!
Last week, after I finished recording today’s podcast episode, I realized how much those experiences changed the ways I relate to the stones. They awakened a deep curiosity about where the stones come from and what stones live close to home.
Since that last visit, I’ve gone mining (from Thunder Bay Amethyst to Arkansas Quartz, Wisconsin Moonstone, and even Herkimer Diamonds).
I have combed the beaches for Petoskey stones, agates, fossilized corals, and basalt.
On my summer walks UP north, I linger amidst freshly laid driveway gravel to look for copper, calcite, chlorastrolite, and even a few surprise pieces of chrysocolla.
What a twist?! . . . from shopping live at the show to listening to the land beneath my feet. There is something truly special about finding these favorites so close to home.
Looking back, that may be one of the show’s greatest gifts: it sent me home to my own land and local area . . . to listen, to learn, and to creatively weave local stones into my jewelry.
Over the past year, I’ve felt it’s time for my jewelry designs to evolve. I’ve played with ideas, but what is next has not felt entirely clear. And then Tucson called, loudly. Ha! Of course it did. The stones have impeccable timing.
So . . . today, I’m bringing you along for this little adventure as I return to Tucson, hike, shop stones, and discover what is waiting to be seen.
