When we step into ceremony, we are stepping outside of our linear time and merge with the Divine. As we do this, we activate a personal transformation (emotionally, physically, and/or spiritually). When we begin our ceremony by opening sacred space, we invite support for our transformation by invoking the presence of our ancestors, loved ones, spirit guides, and the Divine.

I first learned of this practice when studying Shamanism with the 4 Winds Society.  I was in awe of how powerfully a simple prayer elevated the energy of a space and the practices that were happening within that space.

Over the years this practice is one that I have integrated in many ways…and it is how I begin and end every ceremony, ritual, healing session, and so much more.

Below is the original copy that was shared with me by the 4 Winds (from the pageOpening Sacred Space). I have since adapted it to match me and it is something I adapt situationally to match my intention or my clients intentions.

This is a powerful way to create a portal of connection between your sacred work and the divine. It s intended to be opened during the sacred work and then closed after.

I would encourage you to get familiar with the language as it is experiencing the prayer just as it is written, allowing all of you to experience the deeper meaning and connection that it offers, guiding you to connect with the cosmology of our world.

As you get comfortable with it then allow it to evolve in ways that feel natural and fluid for you.

South
To the winds of the South Great Serpent
Wrap your coils of light around us
Teach us to shed the past the way you shed your skin
To walk softly on the Earth Teach us the Beauty Way

West
To the winds of the West Mother Jaguar
Protect our medicine space
Teach us the way of peace, to live impeccably
Show us the way beyond death

North
To the winds of the North Hummingbird,
Grandmothers and Grandfathers Ancient Ones
Come and warm your hands by our fires
Whisper to us in the wind
We honor you who have come before us
And you who will come after us, our children’s children

East
To the winds of the East Great eagle, condor
Come to us from the place of the rising Sun
Keep us under your wing
Show us the mountains we only dare to dream of
Teach us to fly wing to wing with the Great Spirit Mother

Earth
We’ve gathered for the healing of all of your children
The Stone People, the Plant People
The four-legged, the two-legged, the creepy crawlers
The finned, the furred, and the winged ones
All our relations

Father Sun
Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, to the Star Nations
Great Spirit, you who are known by a thousand names
And you who are the unnamable One
Thank you for bringing us together
And allowing us to sing the Song of Life
